City Center, situated in the heart of Helsinki, has undergone several renewals and renovations since its completion in 1967. In 2019, AS&H carried out the renovation of commercial premises on the K1 floor, which is the main connection between the station tunnel and the street level. We had previously implemented a restaurant-floor renewal of the City Center.
The aim of the K1 floor renovation was to find a new, modern visual look for the space that was previously perceived as cold and lacking personality. In the new concept, the sturdy concrete structures that are characteristics for the building have been highlighted. They have been combined with new solutions for the floor as well as lower surfaces of shop fronts and ceiling vaults with their lighting. The design of the site utilises brass, wood, and concrete surfaces typical for the time of construction, enriching them with a colour effect and a discreet black facade of the shops. Our designs include all surfaces of the customer aisle on the K1 floor, which includes floor, ceiling, shop facades, and the lighting.
